The Narva power plants, located in eastern Estonia, right at the Russian border, are the largest oil shale-fueled power plants in the world. The photographer flies us over their ash storage lagoons. These turquoise waters immediately entice the eye because they remind one of paradisiacal locations frequently associated with exoticism. Darker, brownish-coloured hues contrast with these blue and green tones. Here, the shapes that form from the colour combination produce a composition that is at the core of Bernhard Lang's work, which leans toward abstraction. This composition is visible from the sky.
Since 2010, Bernhard Lang dedicates himself to aerial photography, travelling around the world and looking for singular landscapes impacted by human activities. From the sky, these views almost look like abstract paintings.

Bernhard Lang
Since 2010, Bernhard Lang has been doing aerial photography. He has travelled the world in search of landscapes strongly scarred by man’s imprint, which he photographs from aerial viewpoints using a ultra-light plane or a helicopter. Seen from the sky, these panoramas look almost like abstract paintings. Firmly in the field of contemporary art, his work seeks to incite thoughts on the environment whilst also giving aesthetic pleasure. Over the last ten years, his work has been recompensed by different international awards. “The aerial views show the world out of a different, uncommon perspective. [...] Also, you see the influence, the impact of the humans on the world. That’s what I’d like to show.’’
